Loss tangent Tan δ
The loss tangent Tan δ is the ratio of equivalent series resistance to capacitive reactance in equivalent series circuit, or the ratio of active power (dissipated power) to reactive power under sinusoidal voltage.
The measuring device is the same as the series capacitance CS.
IEC 60384-4 specifies the following maximum values:
The above values apply to capacitors with a maximum charge of 100000 μ F. Accordingly, the capacitance with higher maximum charge allows larger loss tangent.
Frequency and temperature characteristics of loss tangent
The same as capacitance, the loss tangent is affected by frequency and temperature. The figure below shows examples of commonly used low-voltage and high-voltage capacitors.
